Not Just Politics: Citizens’ Academies in Asheville/Weaverville Matters for Health

RiverRock Clinic is uniquely positioned — we’re incorporated in Weaverville, but get mail through Asheville.

We’ve been thinking more about how health is deeply tied to policy — and how knowing how local government works can help us all thrive.

  • Weaverville’s Citizens Academy gives a great intro to town departments — police, fire, parks, and more. This one runs Jan-June once a month. Apply now for 2026 and see Dr. Lok there!

  • Asheville’s Citizens Police Academy runs twice a year and is open to curious citizens of all backgrounds. It is an intensive once a week for 10 or so week. From trying on a bomb suit to learning about use of force to a scenario day where you are in the police officer's role, it's informative no matter your politics. See pictures of Dr. Lok at the last academy. Highly recommended.

No matter where you fall on the political spectrum, being informed and building relationships with local leaders is essential to creating a healthier, more connected community.
